For TMJ Sufferers With Hearing Loss
The SleepGuard biofeedback headband is designed for people without hearing loss, so the sound it makes is rather quiet, to signal you to subconsciously stop clenching without waking you up. This quiet sound may not be noticeable to people with hearing loss, so we do offer a custom modification for people with hearing loss.
The custom modification costs us about $100 to have done, so the price of custom-modified unit is $100 more, and that $100 modification cost is non-refundable. Orders for such modified units are only taken over the phone (not through this website), because we want to make sure we think there is a good chance of the modified unit helping you, and we want to make sure you understand everything you need to understand to have a good chance of success.
There are two other biofeedback devices (not made by us) on the market that don't use sound, and may be helpful to people with hearing loss. We are happy to tell you about them if you contact us either by phone or by e-mail. One of the devices goes in the mouth and uses vibration as the biofeedback. While the idea behind it is excellent, it presents a danger in that it contains highly toxic circuitry and a highly toxic battery.
The other alternative competing biofeedback device does not go in the mouth, and provides biofeedback through a mild electric shock. While the shock on that unit is mostly "local" at the temple, part of the shock current does penetrate into the brain. Some people have reported referred pain in other parts of the body from the shocks, and some have reported seeing flashes of light during the shock. Another problem reported by people who use that device is that the repeated shocks desensitize the nerves at the temple, and the device may become less effective is such desensitization happens. There is a further problem that that device only senses clenching on one side of the head, so a person using that device may subconsciously change to clenching on only one side, which causes its own set of unique TMJ problems.
There are, of course, many other TMJ treatments offered by a variety of healthcare practitioners. As you continue on your journey of seeking a treatment that will be effective for you, you may want to read the article linked below.
