The Science of How SleepGuard Biofeedback Works
Definition of Biofeedback (from Mayo Clinic)
Biofeedback is a technique you can use to learn to control your body’s functions. With biofeedback, you’re connected to electrical sensors that help you receive information (feedback) about your body (bio). This feedback helps you focus on making subtle changes in your body, such as relaxing certain muscles, to achieve the results you want, such as reducing pain.
SleepGuard uses biofeedback to enable you to stop clenching or grinding your teeth in your sleep, so that the damage from that clenching or grinding can heal, and you can wake up feeling great each day.
The diagram above illustrates the science behind getting out of pain using the SleepGuard biofeedback headband. The black conductive silicone rubber pads in the inside of the headband rest against the skin at the temples and the far left and right of the forehead, and pick up tiny electrical signals from the muscles on the head. Those signals are fed to the electronic module in the center of the headband, allowing the module to detect when and how hard you are clenching or grinding your teeth.
If you slowly increase how hard you are clenching, the signals slowly get bigger, as shown in the upper green waveform in the diagram above. As soon as the bite force of the clench goes over the threshold you set, a gentle sound is made by the round stainless steel back of the module, which rests against the center of the forehead when the headband is worn. Once your subconscious mind has learned that the RelaxTone™ sound is a reminder to relax your jaw and keep yourself safe, your subconscious mind will automatically relax your clenching muscles as soon as the RelaxTone sound is heard.
Using the SleepGuard Biofeedback Headband, You’ll Learn to Stop Clenching As You Sleep
Once your subconscious mind knows what the RelaxTone sound means, you can think of it as giving you a subtle, non-invasive “brake light” for your nighttime teeth grinding. In many ways, it is like seeing brake lights ahead while driving a car. Once your subconscious mind has learned that responding to brake lights is important for your safety, you will automatically step on the brakes, even if you only see the brake lights out of the corner of your eye while you are adjusting your car radio.
Think of your headband as a brake light that detects when you clench, giving you a gentle reminder to release your jaw muscles, or “step on the brakes.” Because the sound is so soft and is heard mainly through your forehead, it can help you to stop your clenching without waking you or your partner. You can even adjust the volume to create the ideal level of sound for your personal desire. After a little practice responding to the sound, clenching is eliminated without you needing to wake up, because your brain learns that responding quickly and cooperatively keeps you safe.
Using SleepGuard, You’ll Train Yourself to Stop Undesirable Behavior, Without Invasive Measures or Waking Up!
The SleepGuard biofeedback headband doesn’t put anything into your body. No toxins. No drugs. No electricity. No EMFs. It works as your partner, allowing you to learn your way out of an addictive habit that has been causing you pain.
Just Two Minutes of Practice Assures You Respond Better While Sleeping
Below are some important steps to include in your two minutes of daytime practice to condition yourself to relax your jaw quickly and cooperatively each and every time you are signaled in your sleep.
- Briefly clench on purpose during an activity such as doing e-mails or washing dishes. Practicing willingly letting go of this activity when you hear the biofeedback sound is like practicing letting go of the dream you are having when you clench during sleep.
- As soon as you hear the first quiet part of the biofeedback tone, relax your jaw, close your eyes, and gratefully let go of what you were doing
- Imagine yourself instinctively relaxing, letting go of whatever dream you are having, and going into deeper sleep every time you hear the biofeedback sound while sleeping
- Imagine yourself waking up feeling relaxed and refreshed
How SleepGuard Helps You Track Your Progress
The SleepGuard biofeedback headband not only provides biofeedback, it also tracks how many times you clench your teeth each night, as well as the total number of seconds you clench. This will allow you to see how much your clenching is reduced over time. This can be very helpful, because you will see that pain symptoms start to go away soon after nightly damaging clenching time is significantly reduced.
